Who is Odyssey Works? What is an Odyssey? How does an Odyssey work? How do I get to be The Participant?
I’ve received a bunch of questions over the last 2 weeks about our exciting relationship with Odyssey Works set for this year’s BEAT Festival in September. So, I asked Abraham Burickson, the group’s Artistic Director, to hop on the phone for a talk about the group, the process, how to be involved, what to expect, and lots more.
A snapshot of what I learned:
- Odyssey Works began as an idea at a writer’s conference overlooking the Big Sur
- There is one, very fortunate individual chosen to be the focus of the piece, there is an application process to become this person, and this person is referred to as “The Participant”
- It is a highly collaborative process, which is based on ONE person’s life (The Participant’s) but with many artists bringing their talents to the shape of the experience
- A LOT of people who go through an Odyssey make dramatic life changes afterwards. The last 3 quit their jobs, all participants have moved post-Odyssey, they end (or begin) relationships – serious stuff often follows this powerful experience…
Abe talks a lot about the process of creating the experience, and what happens to the participant AND the artists involved. Really amazing stuff, listen here:
