Can My Group/Piece/Dance Co/Best Friend Be In BEAT?
Sure can. But, unlike other festivals, there is no application process. So, contact us here, follow the instructions and we’ll be in touch. That’s it! After that, we will do our best to see if you are a good fit for the festival, attend your next show, or ask if we might attend a rehearsal. No one will be accepted into BEAT without first being seen by our Artistic Director.
How Much Are Tickets?
Not sure, but not much (if any). I just got off the phone with Lincoln Center trying to purchase tickets to see a show for the Lincoln Center Festival. It took me nearly 20 minutes of time, $10/ticket in extra processing fees (surcharge! facilities charge!), and a vague idea about where to pick them up day-of-performance. This will not be your experience with BEAT – promise. Once the ticket prices are posted, you will see what we mean. Heck, we might even make the shows free. Stay tuned.
Can I Join Your Team?
Definitely! We need all sorts of help now as we’re just getting started. During the festival, we will need LOTS of volunteers to help us spread the word and to assist at the venues. Stay up to date with our current staffing needs here: Join BEAT
Why No Music?
Listen, we love music. Seriously. And we do intend to utilize Brooklyn-based musicians for benefits, opening/closing night celebrations, or other special occasions (Sufjan, are you reading this?). But, Brooklyn gets a heavy dose of music in the summer (see: Celebrate Brooklyn & The Northside Festival as two great examples). So, we wanted to do something different and present the other performing arts: theater, dance and voice. Some might ask, “why voice?”. Good question too. We’re searching for vocalists who are less about writing catchy tunes (nothing wrong with that btw), and who are more about investigating the theatricality of the voice, sound and performance. Meredith Monk is the best example possible of this. She, unfortunately, has “emerged” and won’t be at any BEAT festivals. The NEXT Meredith Monk…that’s who we’re searching for.
I Live In Manhattan, Can I Work With You?
Absolutely. We’re hardcore about presenting artists from Brooklyn, but if someone is skilled in any of the areas we need, I don’t care where you’re from, we want you involved. Click Here to learn more about our current needs and other job listings.
Where Will The Performances Be?
Hey, no peeking! Just like it’s a crime to open presents on Christmas Eve, we don’t give out the venues until the entire festival is announced. We will, however, reveal the neighborhoods of where the performances will be in advance. Oh, and if you know of an awesome performance space that we should check out? Hit us up here: Contact BEAT Also, nothing is off-limits. Got a friend with a cool loft space? We want to know. Do you have a rooftop with a lot of space, and a killer view of the city? We definitely want to know. Do you live in an abandoned, yet fully functioning and somehow impossibly unknown theater space? Yeah, we really want to know about that.
